Coles Electroacoustices manufacture high quality ribbon microphones for radio studio broadcasting and sporting applications where close talking, minimal background noises need to be excluded. Ribbon microphone technology has been refined over past decades drastically improving reliability whilst maintaining the excellent bass frequency response characteristics these units are noted for. The 30's image of these microphones has been carefully preserved and the manufacturing techniques and build quality are of a high standard.

Commentators: Model 4104

The 4104 Commentator's Noise Cancelling Ribbon Microphone is of British Broadcasting (BBC) design and used for reproducing high quality commentary speech from noisy surroundings by cancelling out a considerable degree of background noise.

The 4104 has a proven reliable performance capability, being since its introduction used by such broadcasting networks as the BBC, IBA, CBS and ABC.

The 4104 is not unduly affected by wind noise and can be used in air stream velocities up to 20 mph (32 km) without notable difference in speech quality. With the use of a simple windshield attachment good quality speech reproduction can also be achieved in winds ranging up to 40 mph (64 km) or more.

Importantly the polar response is effectively bi-directional allowing one or more commentators to make clear individual commentary close side by side without interference from mutual cross over talk.

This microphone is generally regarded as the leader in its field. Wherever it is essential to single out a speaker's voice without transmitting background noise, this is the choice of buyers from all over the world.

One example application is its use in sports reporting, selecting the spoken commentary and cutting out the roar of racing cars at Brands Hatch or the screams of the little old ladies in the ringside seats at wrestling contests. News reporters broadcasting eyewitness accounts of processions and street demonstrations have also depended on this type of microphone.

Equally important is its application in noisy industrial environments; prompt information and explicit instruction may be matters of life and death in a shunting yard or rolling mill, and a noise-cancelling microphone of this quality is the most vital element in such communications.

Broadcasters: Model 4115

The 4115 Broadcaster's Noise Cancelling Ribbon Microphone is used for close indoor talking situations where good quality broadcasting and public address announcement speech is required to be reproduced in conditions with high background noise present.

The 4115 has a proven reliable performance capability, being since its introduction, used by broadcasters throughout the world.

The high degree of acoustic damping applied to the robust corrugated aluminium ribbon ensures freedom from resonance and relative immunity to handling noises and mechanical shocks.

There are many situations in which speech is partially or completely drowned out by background noise; for example in aircraft, saw mills, shunting yards, or power stations. Yet these are all places where it may be a matter of life and death to have spoken instructions heard and obeyed without a second's delay.

The 4115 is the microphone of choice for these circumstances.

There are two special versions for use in aircraft where, in addition to the other requirements, it needs to be compatible with the aircraft's electronics. These models are approved by the Civil Aviation Authority, and are also the choice of aircraft manufacturers and airlines.

4038 Studio Ribbon Microphone

The 4038 Studio Ribbon Microphone is used for broadcasting and recording such sounds where a clear smooth wide range frequency response, absent of transient distortion and relatively high sensitivity is essential.

The frequency response of the 4038 is exceptionally flat from 30 to 15,000 Hz and throughout this range the shape of the bi-directional (figure of eight) polar response is maintained substantially constant both in the horizontal and vertical planes, giving a natural smooth sonic quality textured response to sound signal being picked up.

Studio microphones have now achieved a remarkable fidelity of reproduction. If the microphone is not close to perfection, there is no point in having expensive systems to take the sound the rest of the way to the audience's ears.

4040 Studio Ribbon Microphone

The 4040 is the newest addition to the Coles line of ribbon microphones. With a bold look, greater output, and a wider frequency response, the Coles 4040 is sure to compliment any studio microphone cabinet.

This is the first ribbon microphone that Coles have developed using the very latest magnet technology. The frequency response of the 4038 is exceptionally flat from 30 to 15,000 Hz but where the 4038 starts to drop off, the 4040 carries on passed 20,000 Hz and throughout this range, like the 4038, the shape of the bi-directional (figure of eight) polar response is maintained substantially constant both in the horizontal and vertical planes, giving a smooth sonic quality textured response to sound signal being picked up

The 4040 has some rather unique features, for a start it is gold plated, but more importantly the ribbon/magnet assembly has its own in built shock mounts separating it from the main body of the microphone that can be secured for transit, an adjustable universal stand mount and a hard case for storage. There is also no discernable stray magnetic field, making it very easy to mount head to head in a "Blumlein" (crossed figure-of-eights) stereo configuration.
